FONTANA VILLAGE HOSTS APPALACHIAN EXTREME ADVENTURE RACE

Elementary and middle school students were treated to a presentation from local adventure racers on April 5. Speakers explained the grueling sport and showed their racing gear and memorabilia from competitions all over the world including two Eco Challenges. Jon Wilkenson from the Nantahal Outdoor Center, showed students how racers use maps and compass to navigate.

World-class racers Norm and Tracyn Greenburg of Bryson City also spoke about the upcoming Appalachian Extreme Adventure Race scheduled for May 18. They are the race directors for this 3 to 4-day non-stop event, which includes hiking/running, mountain biking, paddling, and navigating with map and compass.

Fontana Village, the site of the finish line, will be hosting the event. The racecourse will not be disclosed until the night before the race but is expected to encompass many area forest service roads, trails, and lakes.

Three person coed teams will be competing from all over the country for free entry into the Inaugural Discovery Channel World Championship Race to take place in Europe the 2nd week in September 2001. The winning team also receives $5,000 participation inducement from Discovery Channel, Inc. to help offset travel and preparation expenses. Cash and outdoor gear will be awarded to finishing teams.

Local adventure racer Nancy Johnson, Tim Morris from Bryson City, and Tony Berwald from Atlanta will be representing Team Fontana Village.
