Fontana Lake was formed in 1944 when Fontana Dam began operation. Formed by the Little Tennessee River and its many tributaries, Fontana Lake stretches 29 miles across the northern boundary of Graham County. The Great Smoky Mountain National Park borders the lake to the north.

Numerous campgrounds and boatramps can be found along the south shore of the lake. Access to the north shore is by boat or hiking.

Fontana Lake offers great fishing and other water sports. There are also scenic vistas of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.
