Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, one of the few remaining virgin hardwood tracts in the Appalachians, is located in Graham County. The Joyce Kilmer loops are the most traveled of the trails. The lower loop is about 1 1/4 mile and passes the Joyce Kilmer Memorial. From the memorial plaque the upper loop winds another 3/4 mile but here is where the largest of the trees can be found. Some of the 400 year old poplars are more than 20 feet in circumference and tower more than 100 feet tall. For a complete trail map of the Joyce Kilmer/Slickrock area CLICK HERE |
